Four years have passed since the events in MANDARIN YELLOW when Socrates' Chinese heritage pulled him into the mysteries of his oriental roots. Socrates now is a wiser and more cynical investigator. In the time that has passed since MANDARIN YELLOW, Socrates' father has died and his mother has returned to her Greek origins, moving into a condominium populated by elderly Greek immigrants, including one woman who is reputed to be the direct descendant of the ancient Oracle at Delphi. And that is where Socrates' problems begin as Socrates, skeptical at first of the old woman's powers, soon learns the hard way that her dire prophecies sometimes have a disquieting and deadly way of coming true. Just as revenge does.

After being enthralled by Steven M. Roth’s “Mandarin Yellow," I ordered, and eagerly, awaited the arrival of the second in the Socrates Cheng series, “The Mourning Woman.” While “Mandarin Yellow” concentrated upon our hero’s Chinese background and culture, here we are exposed to his Greek side, as seen through his mother.I am particularly sensitive to Socrates Cheng since hs is an American descended from a Chinese father and a Greek mother. Both my parents emigrated from Sparta, Greece. I was born in the US but spoke fluent Greek as well as English. My college room mate was born in Hong Kong. He spoke English with a British accent and significantly, fluent Mandarin Chinese. We devoted many hours exploring our heritages and ancestry to each other. He would have loved to be exposed to Socrates Cheng; regretfully, he was killed in a boating accident several years ago.
Socrates’ mother has moved to a Washington condominium which has attracted a large elderly Greek immigrant population. One fascinating resident is reputed to be the direct descendant of the Oracle at Delphi. A series of murders take place within the walls of the condominium which has the residents on edge and the police investigations stupefied.
Socrates takes on the investigative task of of solving the mysterious murders. Clues after clues are thrown out. You, the reader, will not be able to make heads or tails of just who might be responsible. Author Roth takes you down to the very last pages of his thriller before he permits Socrates Cheng to solve the murders. You will need to be patient until the very end before you are let in on the consuming mystery. You will be amazed! Pure detective story enjoyment is had by Roth’s well researched and well written mystery thriller. Can we await the third of this fascinating series?

The Mourning Woman A Socrates Cheng mystery Socrates Cheng Mysteries Book 2 edition by Steven M Roth Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
WORDY, UNINTERESTING, DULL AND CONTRIVED. THE OTHER REVIEWS I READ INCLINED ME TO BUY THIS TRITE TRIFLE. MUST HAVE BEEN WRITTEN BY A FRIEND OF THE AUTHOR OR SOME OTHER UNSOPHISTICATED INDIVIDUAL. .
The Mourning Woman, the second in the series of Socrates Cheng mystery novels, is an intelligent and engrossing murder mystery that is stylish, well-crafted, and every bit as satisfying as Steven M. Roth's debut Cheng mystery, Mandarin Yellow. Roth is a great storyteller. I look forward to the third installment of the series.
Steven Roth has done it again. He captivated me from the first page and kept me guessing till the last. It was a fast and thoroughly enjoyable read. As with his original Socrates Cheng title, "Mandarin Yellow", a lot of fascinating history is interwoven throughout - this time from Greece instead of China. I loved the new characters, some you love to hate and others you learn to love. They both have their places in the plot development.
I can't wait for the third volume. Keep them coming!
There is great pleasure, for me at least, watching an artist evolve. Character development, pacing, threading, and the interweaving of relationships with the plotting of the novel all have progressed significantly from the enjoyable first Socrates Cheng book. It's a good read.
The author kept me eager to keep reading. The suspense kept building and new surprising turns deepened the mystery. The conclusion then came suddenly but left me puzzled about some issues that seemed important but we're never resolved. I wonder if book 3 in the series will build on those.
This is the second book in the series. The characters are intricate and entertaining. This is well-researched and a welcome change. It is as if Charlie Chan has been catapulted into this decade. Although it's pace is slower than other novels of this genre, even this seems to reflect the Oriental culture of our detective, Mr. Cheng. Thank you for these two books, Mr. Roth, and I am looking forward to reading further into this fascinating story.
This is the 2nd Socrates Cheng mystery I have enjoyed. The mysteries are well plotted and intricate. It is also very interesting from the points of view of both Greek and Chinese cultures. I have say also that I love reading about Georgetown in DC and Little Washington, Virginia because I worked in DC, living in Georgetown, and my parents lived very close to Little Washington.....brought back a lot of memories. I think the only "criticism" I might have is that I don't feel I know Socrates very well....his character could be more fully developed.
